It is a simple devices and while there are things that could improve it, it does function as advertised. It does not change sides on tapes; you have to manually flip tapes. It has no auto-seek. You have to stop and start MP3 files between tracks. So while it could be a better value for the money, I have not found the device I would like to have. If you have one of the older tape decks that have all of the features you want, keep it and use it with this.

Within minutes I had digitized one of my 40 year old cassette tapes. You don't really need to bother with the instructions. It's all pretty intuitive.

This has worked great for what I needed to do. I used the Line In to record songs from online from Smule......little did I know you could download them on sownloader. It worked great and recored over 200 songs from a PC via Line In and they sound great. My next project will be to use the built-in Cassette Player and convert some of my first music from the late 80s and 90s. I'll have fun reminiscing playing those old tracks. The Cassette Player also has a speed adjustment knob which will work great for some of these songs. I used to record then bounce to another cassette deck to make tracks but the one deck was faster so each track bounce, the song got faster and the vocals got faster...mickey mouse effect. Get it. It does what it says it does. You can basically record and convert anything into a mp3.

I bought this thing to convert old irreplaceable music cassettes to digital for posterity. I don't know why anyone would want to record anything ONTO a cassette these days (especially from a CD), but I guess they have their reasons. The first unit I bought was one of those things that look like the first Walkmans. Absolute useless trash. The next I bought was the ION Tape 2 PC. It was quarter of what the TASCAM cost but it's obvious why. The TASCAM is way more solid, heavier, and better thought out. Everything is higher quality. With the ION, you had to install or download special software and I could never get the thing to "communicate" with my mac so it didn't matter anyway. With the TASCAM, that isn't even an issue. You stick a flash drive in, put in your cassette, touch the USB button and hit play. The result? Songs on the flash drive that I can THEN bring into any computer and edit, manipulate, email, post online, whatever. Before I returned it, the ION was having other issues and I was afraid it would eventually eat and destroy a tape. Not so with this. Also, any customer support was just non-existent from ION (I tried). I think if I have any trouble with the TASCAM, I should be able to get some help. SO- yeah, it's expensive, but if you want to archive your old cassettes with ease and without worrying about them in the process, this one is totally worth it.
